Macro nutrients are nutrients your body needs in large amounts like carbohydrates, protein, and fat


Role in the Body

  • Fuel during high intensity exercise.
  • Preserve muscle mass during exercise
  • Fuel for your nervous system/brain

Recommended Allowance

  • Sedentary Individuals: 40-50% of your total daily calories should be carbohydrates
  • Exercises Regularly: 60% of your total daily calories should be carbohydrates; those trying to lose weight 40-50% (no less)
  • Athletes or persons involved in heavy training: 70% of your total daily calories should be carbohydrates (3.5-4.5 grams of carbohydrate per pound of body weight)

NOTE: 1 gram of carbohydrate = 4 Calories

Food Sources

  • Grains (mostly whole grains)
  • Dairy (choose low-fat or non-fat)
  • Fruit (choose whole fruits over fruit juices)
  • Eat more complex carbohydrates, found in whole grains, legumes, and starchy vegetables usually take more time for the body to break down and use; therefore, lower amounts of sugars are released at a more consistent rate — instead of peaks and valleys — to keep you going throughout the day.
  • Simple carbohydrates are composed of easy-to-digest, basic sugars, which can be an important source of energy. Some of these sugars are naturally occurring, such as those in fruits, veggies and in milk. Refined or processed sugars are often added to candies, baked goods, and soda.

Recommended Daily Allowance

  • Sedentary Individuals: 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight
  • Recreationally Active or exercise regularly: 0.45-0.68 grams of protein per pound of body weight
  • Competitive Athlete: 0.54-0.82 grams of protein per pound of body weight
  • BodyBuilder: 0.64-0.91 grams of protein per pound of body weight
  • When restricting Calories: 0.364-0.91 grams of protein per pound of body weight
  • Maximum amount of protein the body can utilize: 0.91 grams of protein per pound of body weight
  • For weight loss, this can be reduced to around 1 gram of protein per pound of fat-free mass per day.

NOTE: 1 gram of protein = 4 Calories

Recommended Daily Consumption:

  • Max 2,300 milligrams per day 
  • 1,500 milligrams per day (If you are 51 years or older, trying to lose weight, of African American descent or have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease)
  • The UMMC suggests healthy adults should limit intake to 2,300 milligrams per day, and people with high blood pressure should stay below 1,500 milligrams per day.


Recommended Daily Consumption:

  • No more than 25 percent of total calories (2,000-calorie diet = fewer than 200 calories of sugar per day – or 12.5 teaspoons - or 50 grams
  • The Heart Association recommends a more conservative daily intake of added sugars consisting of 6 teaspoons daily (25 grams) for women and 9 teaspoons (37.5 grams) daily for men.
